Moreton Island

Travelers across the world often revel in the beauty and intrigue that Fraser Island provides, but what many don’t know is that Moreton Island possesses a similar construction and tourist attraction while being about 124 miles (200km) closer to Brisbane.

Activities on Moreton Island
Moreton Island is considered the world’s third largest sand island, and with nearly 95% of the island classified as national park, the untouched natural vibe makes it a brilliant destination for just as many overworked Brisbanites as foreign tourists. Top attractions drawing visitors in to Moreton Island include 4WD excursions, camping, fishing and whale watching (at the right time of the year). Additional activities possible on the island are sandboarding, bird watching, surfing, snorkeling and diving.

Champagne Pools located at North Point makes for a relaxing stop on Moreton Island. Volcanic rock has formed a natural wall with the ocean allowing for some simple, clear pools to form close to shore.

Active travelers may prefer taking advantage of the many walking and hiking paths on the island instead of lounging in rock pools. Walks range from 5 minutes to several hours, and from easy to difficult.

Getting to Moreton Island
Daily barges, ferries and boats help visitors make the trip to Moreton Island. Have a look at Micat, Reality Cruises and Tangalooma Launch for options by water. Flights are rare, but only take 15 minutes from the Brisbane Airport. The best option for most travelers is by ferry by far and is estimated at taking 75 minutes in length from Brisbane each way.

Getting Around Moreton Island
Being an island composed of sand, it is imperative to have a 4WD vehicle to make it around. However, 4WD taxis and 4WD rentals are available on the island for your convenience.
